INSTRUMENT CARE

Whichever instrument you play, proper maintenance is crucial to ensure you get the maximum enjoyment possible for the longest time. Below are some tips which will help you get the most out of your piano, guitar or stringed instrument.

Piano

It is most important to have your piano tuned and serviced regularly. All pianos should be tuned a minimum of once a year. Even if your piano is only used very lightly, changes in temperature and humidity over the course of a year will put your piano out of tune. If you play a lot, have students doing grade five AMEB or above, have an unstable environment or just have a good ear and want your piano to sound it's best, you should tune it at least twice a year.

While regular servicing by a qualified technician will take care of the inside, you will be able to look after the outside of your piano. The modern piano's polyester finish is very easy to maintain. Generally, a light dusting with a feather duster is all you'll need. For finger marks and other dirt you can use window cleaner. You can also purchase special piano polishes, which will help keep your piano looking great.

Guitar

1. NEVER leave your guitar in the car. The sun and heat can cause irreversible damage to your instrument.
2. NEVER clean your guitar with household cleaners or solvents. The finish on your guitar is extremely delicate. There are proper cleaners and polishes available for this.
3. Always wipe down your instrument and strings once you have finished playing.
4. The best form of protection for you guitar is a hard case. While a soft case provides minimal protection, a hard case will insulate as well as absorb knocks and drops.
5. Strings wear out both physically (corrosion and winding damage), and in tone (deteriorating quality, volume and clarity). It is advisable to replace your strings every six to twelve months. (More often if you play regularly)
6. The set up on your guitar should be checked every 6 months. This will ensure that the strings, electronics and tuners are in good condition, the intonation is correct and the action is the way you like it.

Stringed Instruments

1. Do not allow your instrument to dry out or heat up excessively. Make sure you store it away from sunlight, heaters or fireplaces.
2. NEVER leave your instrument in the car. The sun and heat can cause irreversible damage to your instrument.
3. NEVER clean your instrument with household cleaners or solvents. The finish on stringed instruments is extremely delicate. There are proper stringed instrument cleaners available for this.
4. Remove dry rosin dust while it is still fresh as this reduces the need to clean your instrument. Rosin dust can be removed with a dry, soft cloth.
5. By covering your instrument with a cloth while in it's case you can protect it from scratches and insulate it slightly
6. Keep your instrument in it's case when it's not being used.
7. Do not touch the bow hair with your fingers. The slightest amount of dirt or grease on it will greatly affect it's performance.
8. ALWAYS loosen your bow after use.
9. DO NOT over tighten your bow.
10. Strings wear out both physically (corrosion and winding damage), and in tone (deteriorating quality, volume and clarity). It is advisable to replace your strings every six to twelve months. (More often if you play regularly)
