Yamaha U1 and T121

Yamaha's Top Selling Professional Upright Pianos

The Yamaha U1 piano has set the standard for tone, touch, tuning stability and durability for professional upright pianos worldwide. This piano is used by almost all of the leading teaching institutions and a huge percentage of independent teachers. It is also the piano of choice for many performing arts centres, churches and schools, but most of all by hundreds of thousands of musicians and students world wide in their own homes. The Yamaha U1 has a proven track record and would have to be recommended as number one.

In the mid '90s Yamaha set out to develop a high quality professional piano without any unnecessary bells and whistles. An instrument with the characteristics of the U1, the same frame, action, strings, tuning system, soundboard and keyboard, but without the end cost.
Even though the U1 was very reasonably priced, Yamaha found ways of cutting non essential components without compromising quality. The piano they developed is the T121, and we will show you the differences between the two.

The two pianos are both made in the same factory in Kakegawa, Japan, and most of their components are identical.

There are just two internal differences;

Bridges

- The U1 has a hardwood bridgecap. The T121 does not.

Hammers

- The U1 has double felted hammers. The T121 is single felt.

There are several differences externally;

Back
- The U1 has five back posts, one more than the T121.
- The U1 has brass castors. The T121s are steel.
- The U1 has a slow drop, lockable fallboard. The T121 does not.
- The U1 has an extended music rest, while the T121 has a normal music rest.
Cabinets
- The U1 has a softer look, while the T121 has a squarer, plainer cabinet.

Although most of the differences are cosmetic, we have found that the extra back post on the U1 provides better tuning stability in the first year or two. After that period there appears to be no difference in tuning stability between the two pianos.

The T121 has most of the performance of the U1 at under 70% of the cost. Check out these two outstanding pianos at Logans Pianos today.
